3-D Projection Lowers Cost and Improves Quality on Helicopter Paint Jobs
Craig Cappai, President of Delta Sigma Company (DSC) spoke to Aviation Business Daily about the company’s patented 3-D ProjectionWorks system. This 3-D ProjectionWorks system provides a fast, innovative, and economical way to apply paint masks to helicopters and other aircrafts.
DSC developed an augmented reality (AR) application to assist in working instructions for assembly processes, final finishes, and wire harnesses. As the inventor and patent holder of the ProjectionWorks technology, DSC has a lead in the aerospace industry.
DSC’s ProjectionWorks has three focused vertical markets with a specific plug-in for each one. ProjectionWorks can quickly mask an aircraft and paint complex or simple paint schemes on a complex shape, “ProjectionWorks has been applied to fighter jets, cargo planes, tankers, business jets, commercial aircraft and rockets. It can read in 3-D CAD model data and sequence that into a logical flow of work instructions that the aircraft mechanic sees right on the assembly without the use of drawings or other documentation,” Cappai said.
Cappai elaborates on the end users within the aerospace industry. ProjectionWorks users include: Boeing, Airbus, Airbus Eurocopter, USAF, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, BAE, Bell, Gulfstream, Dassault, Cessna, Embraer, Alenia, General Atomics, ATK, Spirit and Triumph, among others.
Cappai realized the need to push more than their current offerings within ProjectionWorks, and added to the interview, “Recently, DSC has added a new capability to ProjectionWorks to guide wire harness assemblers. Also, just being released this summer is a new capability to accept data from several metrology packages to project NDI or other type measurement data onto the surface of the part.”
The current industry standard of applying paint masks to aircrafts, includes a person spending a vast amount of time hand masking each section of the aircraft intending to execute a 2-D drawing. Eliminating the natural human error from this process, ProjectionWorks can complete the same project using a “paint-by-numbers” type process.
